International Democracy Day
On September 15, we celebrated the International Day of Democracy. Article 1 in the Romanian Constitution proclaims the democratic nature of our state, based on values such as human dignity, respect for the rights and freedoms of citizens, justice and political pluralism. In a democracy, respecting and promoting human rights is the cornerstone of a functioning society. Fighting domestic violence, child abuse, promoting gender equality, combating racism, intolerance and hate speech, eliminating discrimination, ensuring the rights of people with disabilities are just some of the steps of a functional democracy.
Through a democratic path, Romania can prosper and provide its citizens with a favorable environment for their development and well-being. Each of us is responsible for this journey. Each action contributes to the consolidation of or, on the contrary, to diminishing the democratic nature of the Romanian state.
I chose to fight for a country where equal opportunities and opportunities exist de facto, not just de jure. I want every child to have a chance at education, to exercise this right without discrimination, which is ensured by the Constitution and the International Conventions to which Romania is party.
In this regard, we have submitted a legislative initiative that ensures the right to education for children who do not have an ID or identity documents. The educational establishments where these children present themselves are obliged to provide them with general compulsory education services and to announce social assistance services or police authorities, in order for them to carry out the required procedures for obtaining an ID and for registering the children in the civil status registers.
I count on your support, dear colleagues, to vote for this legislative initiative, as a chance at education means an additional chance at forming citizens with a civic, pro-democracy spirit.
