The global #Girl2Leader campaign – for the first time in Romania

The global #Girl2Leader campaign took place between 8 – 11, of October  and brought together 31 girls from across the country, aged 14 – 17 years. The event was launched by the Women Political Leaders Global Forum (WPL) and the key day of the campaign is the „International Day of the Girl”. With the slogan Lead Like A Girl! this initiative seeks to inspire, empower and motivate young girls to become the best future leaders for the nation and for themselves

More than 30 young girls that took part at this event made their way from all around the country: București, Craiova, Timișoara, Cluj-Napoca, Focșani, Alba-Iulia or Brăila. With 91 applicants, the 31 selected girls had the opportunity to hear via personal stories how each Member of Romanian Parliament got involved in politics and to ask them face-to-face questions. For one day, female Parliamentarians hosted the group of girls to give them a personal introduction to politics for a „day in the life of” experience.

#Girl2Leader wants to empower young girls  to get active in politics.  Still today, even with women being half of the population, political decisions are mostly made by men – less than 20% of national parliamentarians in Romania are women. It represents a special opportunity  to empower girls from Romania, encouraging them to consider leadership roles in their local communities, and to get involved in politics by hearing inspiring personal stories from women politicians, to learn how they got involved in this field

During the four days campaign that was hosted at the Romanian Parliament, Cotroceni Palace and the World Bank in Bucharest, the group of girls had the chance to interact with female leaders in politics, business, diplomacy and NGO in order to increase awareness about how women can and should play an important role in the political decision-making process and in the public sphere. Also, the girls had the opportunity to participate in several workshops held by Monica Jitariuc, Elena Calistru și Florentina Chiru and to learn about social media, active citizenship and gender equality.
